NEW DELHI: The city-based NGO Wildlife SOS rescued and brought back 50 Indian star tortoises, which were trafficked to Singapore, to be sold at higher rates in the black market.

The rescue was carried out with permission from the environment ministry, while Singapore Airlines was roped in to help in free transportation.

The species is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and is listed in Appendix II of the CITES.
