Can lions and tigers coexist?

A tiger that had entered the lion’s territory in the jungles of Gir, was found dead. Though only a detailed post-mortem of the tiger’s body would reveal the exact cause of its death, yet it is widely believed that lions do not socially accept tigers in their territory and often kill them.

Another reason for the tiger ‘s death could be the degraded forest cover of Gir. As tigers need thick vegetation cover with sufficient prey base to survive, Gir forest was obviously not suitable.
