AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court directed the Centre to decide on declaring Gir Natioanl Park & Sanctuary and the adjacent Paniya and Mitiyala Sanctuary a ‘Critical Wildlife Habitat’ in 12 weeks’ time.
The court said the authorities should take an early decision, preferably within 12 weeks, under provisions of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, and particularly keeping in mind the definition pertaining to Critical Wildlife Habitat.
Grant of the status of critical wildlife habitat may have a major impact on the lives of the people living in the forest areas.
