MUMBAI: A 10-year-old male leopard named Bhandara died at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park rescue centre on Monday night following an acute illness.
This is the second leopard death at the SGNP rescue centre in the past six days. Last week, a 10-month-old sub-adult male leopard, Suraj, had also died in a similar fashion.
The SGNP director and chief conservator of forests, Anwar Ahmed, said that they have set up an inquiry to thoroughly investigate into these two sudden leopard deaths. “Our officials are probing it from all angles, including any possibility of food poisoning.
The meat samples given to leopards and also their viscera have been sent to the state forensic laboratory in Kalina, Santacruz, for analysis,” said Ahmed.
